General
Q: How do I book your artists?
A: On the “Contact” page you will find an email form telling us about your event. In the “Notes” section, tell us which artists you’re interested in and for how many days. Once we have your event information, we’ll check check the artist’s availability and get back to you asap. Assuming the artist is available, the next best step is to speak together by phone. Once we understand your needs a bit better, we’ll schedule a meeting here at the studio.
Q: What methods of payment do you prefer?
A: We accept payment by cash, personal check, and bank wire transfer. Half of the total payment is required to reserve the date(s) with the balance due no less than 14 days prior to the event.
Q: I see you have a registry service, how does that work?
A: Just include Studio JLK on your registry list and ask your guests to contact us by email. We will take their information and inform them of their payment options. We’ll send you a gift card informing you of your guest’s contribution to your Studio JLK registry account.
Photography & Wedding Films
Q: Do you work digitally?
A: Yes, Studio JLK photographers have a 100% digital workflow.
Q: How many photographers will cover my event?
A: There are always a minimum of 2 photographers on every wedding event, your key photographer and a Studio JLK associate photographer. For weddings of 200 people or more, we suggest a 2nd associate photographer. For events other than weddings, you will have 1 key photographer, with a photo assistant. For events (other than weddings) of 100 people or more, we suggest an associate photographer as well.
Q: Will you be with us the whole day?
A: Yes! Our 10 hour work day means we will be the first ones to arrive and usually, the last to leave.
Q: Will you shoot formal portraits as well?
A: Yes, we’re happy to make formal portraits on the day. From our experience, you should plan 30-45 minutes for this.
Q: What is your “portraiture studio?”
A: With an Irving Penn inspired, hand-painted muslin backdrop, and gorgeous studio lighting, the portraiture studio provides yet another opportunity to capture your friends and family looking their best, and acting their most outrageous. Our portrait photographer stays with the portraiture studio for several hours during your reception, capturing timeless black and white portraits of you and your guests. We also encourage your guests to make spontaneous self-portraits with the help of a remote-controlled shutter release. Towards the tail end of the reception, these portraits can get pretty lively!
Q: Do you print the portrait studio portraits for the guests?
A: Not at the reception. We think you’ll agree, your guests should be on the dance floor, or mingling at the tables, not huddled around a monitor waiting for prints. As with all of your event images, we take the time to edit, color correct and refine these images before we present them to our clients. Once the post production work is done, we upload them to Pictage so you and your guests can relive the moments. Pictage’s print quality is amazing and they make ording prints a snap as well.
Q: Do you retouch the wedding and event images?
A: Every image is corrected for color, saturation, tonality, density, vibrance, and sharpness. We also take the time to make individual transfers of the images we feel are best rendered in black and white. When you order a wedding album, honeymoon album, archival print, or framed print, in addition to our usual color corrections, your images receive professional retouching by our team of world class beauty retouchers.
Q: We’d like to have some professional pictures of us on our honeymoon, is that possible?
A: Yes, this option is available to our clients who purchase a honeymoon album. By the end of your honeymoon, you’ll be tan, relaxed and buzzing. There couldn’t be a better time to make some fun and romantic portraits together. We’ll also be sure to document the hotel, landscapes, seascapes, small details, environmental portraits, and much more. For more information on honeymoon photography and cinematography, just give us a call and we’ll discuss all of the options.
Q: How does the engagement sitting process work?
A: Before we shoot we’ll discuss your ideas for the session. This includes concept, location, inspiration, and any props. Once that’s decided, the next step is to book a date/time for the shoot. Engagement shoots are typically 3-4 hrs long. Within a week, you’ll receive an email with a link to our proofing site. This is where you’ll find the color corrected edit of the best images of the day. The edit is based upon your photographer’s judgement, and typically includes about 10 images from each setup/situation. Once we know which images you want, and at what final output size, we’ll begin the retouching and printing process. Usually this process takes 14 days or less, once you’ve made your edit. Packages include 6 or 8 retouched archival prints, but you can choose as many as you like (see our menu for retouched archival print pricing and details.)
Albums, Prints, and Wedding Films:
Q: We’d like a wedding album, how does the process work?
A: You will receive your book of proofs, usually within 4 weeks of your event. At the same time, your wedding/event images will be available on our proofing website. At that point you have 3 choices. 1. You can let us edit the images to include in your album based on our creative/artistic interpretation of the imagery. 2. Make your choices on the proofing site, and we will make sure to include many/most of your choices while still maintaining some creative control. 3. Choose all the images and we will edit to your specifications. When we know the images you want, we will begin the retouching of those images. Then our graphic designer will create the edit for the album. Once we have the edit dialed in, you’ll be invited to the studio to spend an hour or 2 with our designer, to make final adjustments to the edit of your album. Once you give us the ok, your album will be printed and you should receive it within 30 days.
Q: We’d like a honeymoon album, how does the process work?
A: You will get our honeymoon photo kit to take with you on your trip. When you return, simply place the kit in the pre-addressed box and call UPS to arrange for pickup. When we receive the kit, we’ll begin the editing and color correcting. The process and timing of our wedding and honeymoon albums is essentially the same.
Q: We’d like a framed archival print. What styles of frames do you offer?
A: We keep it classy and simple, offering Brushed Silver, Black, White, Light Wood and Dark Wood. Every print is professionally mounted, matted, and framed by an old guy who wears glasses and smokes a pipe.
Q: We’d like a wedding film, how does that process work?
A: Initially, we will arrange a meeting here at the studio, well in advance of your event. This will be a time to meet and get to know your cinematographer, and vice versa. During this meeting we’ll discuss the details of your event in further detail. Before the event, you will email our film editor a selection of 20 or so of your favorite mp3 music files. When editing your wedding film, our editor will choose from your favorites to create the film’s score. We arrive early to capture as much of the day as possible. Our cinematographers usually work with at least one “b-roll” director. Within 60 days of your event you will receive your finished wedding film. When we transfer your film to you, we will also include all of the master files for your archives.
Q: Please tell us more about the Ipad slideshow?
A: Studio JLK is always innovating. If you haven’t bought an Ipad yet, it’s probably just a matter of time. The ipad has twice the resolution of a computer monitor, so photographs and films looks stunning. When you purchase a wedding or honeymoon album, we will resize those images for an easy to share high definition ipad slide show presentation.
Hair, Makeup, Grooming and Manicure:
Q: Will I meet the hair and makeup artists before the event?
A: Absolutely! First, you will be put in contact with the artist(s) by email. We encourage you to email your artist(s) images (from magazines, movie stills, online, etc…) with hair and makeup styles you love. First your artist(s) will want to see a photo of the dress and any accessories you’ll be wearing. Ideally, you will C/C one another over the course of a few weeks, shooting images and ideas back and forth. Once you’ve narrowed it down to one or 2 possibilities, we will schedule a hair and makeup “try” here in the agency, weeks or even months before your event. The try is about 4 hrs long. We polaroid each look for future reference. For clients who don’t reside in Los Angeles, there are other options. You can come to L.A. for the try, or we can make the try in your home or hotel before the event. This way, there are no surprises on the day, just beauty and glamour.
Destination Weddings:
Q: How do you work when it comes to destination weddings?
A: We specialize in destination weddings. First, choose a photo and/or video package. The package you choose always includes the first day of shooting. All of our artists have day rates for each additional day of shooting after the first day. For weddings there will usually be a 2nd photographer, and in the case of wedding films, an A.D. or B-roll director. Our photographers and cinematographers all fly coach. All of our artists have reasonable travel day fees. Hair and Makeup artists have individual day rates and travel requirements, so please inquire.
